Water Works Historic Preservation

Minneapolis, MN

Water Works reflects a layered history of its Mississippi River site- from Indigenous habitation to industrial milling and lumber to the city's urban development. Damon Farber Landscape Architects led a team of 16 subconsultants including architects, engineers, archaeologists, artists and linguists to reimagine a forgotten remnant 3 acre riverfront site rich with historic resources. Focusing on sustainability and social equity, the design elevates Indigenous culture, reconnects an inner-city population parkland and provides much-needed visitor amenities. The design reuses historic structures, celebrates native species, and harvests and reuses neighborhood rainwater. The project serves as a strong example of inclusive design by thoughtfully weaving a rich mosaic of history to form a modern story rooted in resiliency that resonates with a diverse and evolving population. Water Works has been awarded a Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Award and an Award of Excellence from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
