Vesterheim Museum Heritage Park

Decorah, IA

Vesterheim Heritage Park offers a curated experience that connects visitors to the journey of immigrants who established new lives in America. Damon Farber Landscape Architects led a multidisciplinary team to transform a three-acre mown landscape—previously defined by a scattered collection of historic settlement structures—into a sustainable, story-rich environment.
The redesigned park space creates a stronger context in which museum staff can tell the immigration story to the public. Heritage Park provides improved ADA access to the entire Vesterheim historic building collection and more strongly links the structures to the site and the unique landscape of the Driftless Region. Damon Farber guided the project through all phases, including design and documentation, grant and fundraising support, interpretive planning, and construction administration.
The project was awarded a design award from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
