Fort Snelling Upper Post
St Paul, MN
The Fort Snelling Upper Post was the center of activity at Fort Snelling during the preparation for World War II. Unfortunately, soon after the war the need for the facility was reduced and the buildings quickly fell into disrepair. Hennepin County, the current property owner, engaged a multi-disciplinary team to develop design guidelines that would not only preserve the historic structures, but would also allow the sensitive integration of new uses on the historic base. We led the effort to develop guidelines to preserve valuable historic spaces, views and plant material on the base. New development parcels were identified and guidelines created to control density, scale and architectural materials. The new development is thoughtfully integrated into the campus with an emphasis on preserving historic views, limiting building height and establishing firm criteria for potential developers to propose projects.
