Damon
Farber Associates led a multi-disciplinary team to assess the existing
flood prone structures in downtown Granite Falls, Minnesota and provide
a community supported Master Plan for the future. A series of workshops
were held to gain a better understanding of the hopes and dreams of
the community. Three concept plans were developed and taken back to
the community for input and comments. Damon Farber Associates then
tried to take all aspects and input into consideration while narrowing
down the three concept plans into one proposed flood recovery plan.
The result is a plan that focuses downtown on enhanced recreational
opportunities along the riverfront.
Key features of the plan include:
• A downtown trail along the river that is linked to Montevideo
and the Upper Sioux Agency State Park.
• A greenway with amenities such as an amphitheater, river overlooks,
memorials, dining areas and a new boat launch area.
• A 240-foot long whitewater chute for kayakers will run along
the west bank of the river immediately below the municipal dam.
• Flood protection to the FEMA 100 year flood elevation level.
