Originally designed in 1919, the existing park facilities set in Lowry Hill were badly in need of upgrading and improvements. Design issues included providing pedestrian connections to the seven cascading pools; improving access, including ADA requirements; safety and security issues; and expanded recreational opportunities including trail improvements, play areas and restoration of period public gardens.

Damon Farber Associates worked with the Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board and Minneapolis Public Works to arrive at a design that reflects the needs of the community and the standards set by the city. Key emphasis was given to restoring and enhancing historical elements within the park as well as providing access to historic pieces while still accommodating current ADA Design Standards.
