Damon
Farber Associates worked with the Chanhassen City Center Design Committee
to arrive at a park design that reflects the needs of the community
and the standards set by the city. Key emphasis was placed on maintaining
a cohesive site with the new Library, saving existing trees and creating
a much needed civic space with the quiet, comfortable feel of a backyard
garden in the city.
Design criteria desired by the Planning Committee included adequate
open flexible lawn, plaza spaces for a variety of uses, outdoor rooms
and gardens for reflection, a water feature and use of native materials
in both the hard surfaces and landscaped areas.
The newly constructed Chanhassen Library has three arc shaped design
elements in its architectural facade. These shapes and jutting features
were recreated in the landscape of the adjacent Chanhassen City Center
Park.
