U of M Children's Hospital Fairview
Minneapolis, MN
The University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital Fairview is undergoing a 120 million dollar expansion that will create a new presence on historic Riverside Avenue. Damon Farber Associates created a landscape, playground and plazas that are intended to be attractive and inviting spaces which provide comfort and sanctuary to hospital users. The landscape blends the built environment and the site in a harmonious way that provides both an aesthetic setting, as well as a functional facility.
The Landscape is inspired by the Mississippi River bluffs nearby with their limestone terraces and naturalized plantings. The public realm of Riverside Avenue transitions from a traditional streetscape and boulevard into a series of stepped terraces with limestone walls that lead you into the site through a series of garden spaces toward the main entry plaza. A children’s play area is incorporated within the landscape for use by patients and their families. It is sensitively integrated to provide a link to public spaces within the building as well as provide separation from the more public drop offs and busy streetscape of Riverside Avenue.
