Regions Hospital Expansion

Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota is undergoing a major expansion and asked Damon Farber Associates to lead the design of the site. The hospital is located in downtown St.Paul and is surrounded by busy streets. Wayfinding and clarity of organization were significant considerations. The design of the site needed to develop welcoming drop-offs, a variety of outdoor spaces for staff, patients and visitors, provide vehicular access to two parking ramps and provide pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighborhood all within a vehicular dominated site. The hospital is also located adjacent to the Minnesota State Capital and is under the jurisdiction of the Capital Area Architectural and Planning Board (CAAPB). Damon Farber Associates designed the landscape to sensitively address historical issues as well as the functional, aesthetic and sustainability requirements.

The result is a network of paths and plazas that emphasize pedestrian safety. Decorative paving, bollards, benches, site furnishings and a landscape that reinforce seasonal change, all contribute to making a visitor’s experience different each time they are on the Regions Hospital campus.
