The
1997 flooding of the Red River valley left the cities of Grand Forks
and East Grand Forks with a monumental recovery task. The key to
recovery was the implementation of a long term Flood Protection
system. A Greenway was established within the flood protection system
to allow people to recreate and reclaim a spiritual connection to
the river. Damon Farber Associates was asked to guide the overall
design of the recreation facilities and aesthetics of the Flood
Protection System.
The
Red River Greenway consists of over 14 miles of walking and biking
trails, active recreational areas, numerous interpretive locations,
parking facilities, neighborhood connections, fishing piers, fitness
centers, a community green for community celebrations and over 1,500
acres of restored prairie. Elements
within the Greenway provide a consistent theme throughout the project
that reflect the character of the two communities and their connection
to the river.
