U of M - Pleasant Street Entry
Minneapolis, MN

Working closely with the University of Minnesota, the City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County, Damon Farber Associates developed a conceptual design scenario. The challenge of this design was to delineate this main campus entrance, provide clear movement for diverse circulation of vehicular, bus, bicycle and pedestrian traffic while respecting the context of this historical district

The final design solution introduced the continuation of the existing edge condition, articulated by elements of a low concrete wall, wrought iron fencing and limestone columns. The new gateway design emphasizes the celebration of entering onto campus by articulating the space with four large cast stone columns. Between the columns a detailed wrought iron fence supports The University identity delineated with cast bronze letters and medallions of the University crest. Seat walls and benches provided seating within this highly used area, and additional space for bikes racks are provided for student use. Formal planting of arborvitae, hydrangea and annuals complement the historic character while reflecting the University regents desire to bring more color onto the campus grounds. Specific plants were chosen and planted at strategic places to identify and reflect the schools colors, most of which are in full bloom as school begins every Fall.
